MY WORK LIFE:

Career Relations Specialist

foundation interest 1 interest 2

My work allows me to combine the foundation of HELPING PEOPLE and the interests of EDUCATION and WRITING.

DAY IN AND DAY OUT

Every day, I start out by going through all of my emails to answer any questions from students. Then I input information about the attendees from our Career Development Center's latest event so that students can stay connected with all of our upcoming events and opportunities. I also meet with students to answer questions about resumes, cover letters, and upcoming job and internship interviews. I currently also approve student internship applications to get them registered in their courses.

SKILLS, TRAINING, OR EXPERIENCE NEEDED

I think the things that helped me grow the most were my years in customer service, marketing, and administration. I learned how to carry a conversation with anyone and everyone, and I got tons of experience in problem solving. I also volunteered with the senior population and took acting and improvisation classes. All of this enhanced my confidence and helped me meet a wide variety of people from whom I learned SO much. Each step I took gave me the confidence to take the next!

SOME HELPFUL FIRST STEPS FOR SOMEONE IN HIGH SCHOOL

I would suggest getting involved in as many activities and volunteer opportunities as possible to figure out what it is that brings you the most joy. Taking action to put yourself out there helps you make new friends, meet mentors, and develop the confidence that will help you on your career path and throughout all other areas of your life. You learn new things and become well-rounded by opening yourself up to a variety of experiences. Each experience gets you that much closer to your own path.

HURDLES I OVERCAME

THE “NOISE” FROM PEOPLE

“You should make sure you have financial stability and security above all else.”

HOW I OVERCAME THE “NOISE”

I finally realized that some people's idea of happiness is being comfortable and financially successful, but my idea of happiness is reaching my full potential through helping other people. I spent close to three years after college working at jobs that worked for the time being, but I never stopped to think where I was going. When I finally took a leap and pursued what I thought was my dream, I realized it was not. In the process, however, I found my path. That made it all worth it.
