MY WORK LIFE:

High School English and History Teacher

foundation interest 1 interest 2

My work allows me to combine the foundation of UPHOLDING A CAUSE AND BELIEF and the interests of EDUCATION and POLITICS.

DAY IN AND DAY OUT

I listen to teenagers. Their stories, their heartbreak, their stress, their point-grubbing, their passions, their exhaustion. I develop curriculum. I plan lessons. I grade papers. And then grade more papers. I go to meetings. I file papers. I make photocopies. I make posters. I inspire kids to do more and say more and be more than they ever thought. I challenge some kids to open their mouths and other kids to close them. I laugh. A lot. I get inspired. I get frustrated. I get challenged.

SKILLS, TRAINING, OR EXPERIENCE NEEDED

Teaching is one of those things for which I just don't think you can be fully prepared. Trial by fire, baby. Learn your subject, be willing to say, "I don't know", study classroom management, learn how to navigate the politics of education and then just jump in. The kids will teach you everything you need to know.

SOME HELPFUL FIRST STEPS FOR SOMEONE IN COLLEGE

Study what you love. Don't major in education. Go back and get a masters in Education, but in college, just take classes that open your mind. Study abroad. Find professors that inspire you, figure out what about their teaching inspires you and then use that when you begin teaching. Remember that you teach students first and content second.
