MY WORK LIFE:

Physical Education Teacher/Athletic Director/Coach

foundation interest 1 interest 2

My work allows me to combine the foundation of BEING PHYSICALLY ACTIVE and the interests of EDUCATION and ACTION SPORTS.

DAY IN AND DAY OUT

I drive into work and say good morning to all the students I see. I work at a charter school with a population of around 250 students, so I pretty much know everyone by name, which is amazing. Once class starts, we will start the day with an inspirational quote of the week maybe. Then we workout together, followed by either a team activity or one of their choice. Depending on the season, I would stay after school to coach either cross country, basketball, or track.

SKILLS, TRAINING, OR EXPERIENCE NEEDED

Patience. Lots and lots of patience. Teenagers by nature want to test everything and everyone. However, they also want to be nurtured, whether they act like it or not. They want to be independent, free to make their own choices, but they crave guidance too. It is absolutely necessary to be stern but empathetic with these fragile, angsty souls that are just brimming with possibility in life. One must be skilled at listening. If you listen to a kid and show them you really care, you're in.

SOME HELPFUL FIRST STEPS FOR SOMEONE IN HIGH SCHOOL

Start working with kids. Every job I ever had growing up was related to working with youth in some capacity. This experience made a huge difference.

HURDLES I OVERCAME

THE “NOISE” FROM PEOPLE

“Some people say women shouldn't play tackle football. Women shouldn't wear boys clothing. Women should teach english or elementary school. I have been lucky to have been surrounded by a lot of encouragement and I instill the importance of that in my class.”

HOW I OVERCAME THE “NOISE”

Work hard and be happy. It is very difficult for someone to tear you down when you keep a positive attitude and exude the happiness you feel from pursuing your passion. You will never be disappointed in yourself if you put everything you have and are into what you do and love.
